Men's Panama hats have been a mark of refined taste for over a century, yet choosing the right one remains surprisingly nuanced. Whether you are drawn to the clean lines of a classic fedora, the rakish angle of a teardrop, or the commanding presence of a wide brim, understanding the key differences in style, grade and finish will ensure you invest in a hat that truly suits you.
This guide covers everything you need to know before buying a genuine men's Panama hat.

Despite the name, authentic Panama hats are not made in Panama. They are handwoven in Ecuador, primarily in the coastal town of Montecristi, from the fibres of the Toquilla palm. The craft was recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012, and for good reason: the finest examples can take a single artisan weeks or even months to complete.
A genuine Panama hat is lightweight, naturally breathable, and naturally rated UPF 50+. It rolls without creasing, returns to shape without steaming, and improves with wear. Imitations, machine-woven from paper, synthetic straw, or coarser plant fibres, do none of these things.

Understanding Grades: From Fino to Ultrafino
Panama hats are graded by the fineness of their weave, measured in weaves per inch (WPI). The higher the WPI, the tighter the weave, the longer the hat took to make, and the greater its rarity.
For men seeking a hat for regular wear, a Fino (WPI 10-12) or Superfino (WPI 14-16) grade offers exceptional quality at a considered price point. These hats are fully rollable, hold their shape beautifully, and are well suited to summer racing, garden parties, travel, and everyday summer wear.
For those seeking something rarer, a hat that doubles as a collector's piece, Extrafino (WPI 20-24) and Ultrafino (WPI 28+) grades represent the pinnacle of the weaver's art. At Marchesi di Montecristi, only a small number of these reach our collection each season.
Men's Panama Hat Styles Explained
Classic Fedora
The most versatile silhouette for men. A medium brim of 6-7cm with a pinched front crown suits most face shapes and works equally well with a linen suit, open-collar shirt, or tailored shorts. Our Adventure, Sovereign and Bond are all classic fedora forms.
Teardrop Crown
A slightly softer, more relaxed crown profile that sits naturally without a rigid pinch. Particularly popular for travel and informal occasions. The Roosevelt and St James are defining examples.
Wide Brim
An 8cm brim adds presence and sun protection in equal measure. A statement choice for the races, the Mediterranean, or anywhere you want to be noticed. The Safari carries this silhouette with authority.
Short Brim
For a more contemporary, urban edge. A reduced brim of 4-5cm suits a modern wardrobe and works particularly well in cities. The London is the definitive short-brim option in the collection.
Optimo and Creased Crown
The Optimo features a central crease running front to back rather than side to side, a historic form favoured by statesmen and connoisseurs. The Optimo in Extrafino II grade is among the rarest pieces we offer.
How to Wear a Men's Panama Hat
The cardinal rule: wear it with confidence. A Panama hat reads as effortlessly elegant rather than costume when worn naturally and at the correct angle, level or with a very slight forward tilt. Avoid tilting too far back, which can look casual to the point of careless.
For smart-casual occasions, a Superfino fedora pairs well with a linen or cotton suit in navy, stone, or cream, an open-collar shirt, and leather loafers. For more relaxed settings, the same hat works over a polo shirt and chinos. The hat should feel settled on the head, not perched, if it sits too high, size down.

Choosing the Right Hat Band
The hat band is a detail that makes a significant difference to the overall character of the hat. A plain black grosgrain band is the most versatile and formal option. A regimental stripe, navy and red, or toffee and black, adds personality and works particularly well in country or racing contexts. An Italian bow with a gold pin elevates the hat toward black-tie territory.
All Marchesi di Montecristi men's hats come with the option of plain or decorated bands, detailed on each product page.
Hand-Finished in Britain
Every hat in our collection is hand-finished at our UK atelier. Shaping, blocking, trimming, sweatband fitting and final quality inspection are all carried out by our artisans before any hat is approved for sale. Each piece carries a discreet silk-branded interior patch as a mark of provenance.
Marchesi di Montecristi is a proud member of the British Fashion Council.
