How-To Guides
How to roll your Panama hat
A quality Panama hat can be rolled for travelling. Always roll the hat gently and avoid applying unnecessary pressure to the straw.
1. Place your hand inside the hat from underneath and gently push the crown upwards until the crown is up.
2. Hold the crown with one hand and push the brim down all the way around the hat.
3. Hold the hat with both hands and gently bring one side towards the other, lightly compressing the crown.
4. Starting from one side, roll the hat gently. Do not roll it too tightly, as excessive pressure can crease or damage the straw.
How to install the protective crown patch
The adhesive fabric patch is designed to repair and reinforce the inside front of the crown, corresponding with the pinch of the hat.
1. Peel the protective paper away from the adhesive side of the patch.
2. Position the patch inside the crown. Attach the front part first, directly behind the pinch, then gradually apply the remainder of the patch.
Slightly flatten the crown while applying the patch so the fabric follows the shape of the inner crown and adheres uniformly.
3. Press firmly with your fingers against a flat surface until the entire patch is smoothly and uniformly attached.
How to iron and reshape your Panama hat
A Panama hat that has lost some of its shape can normally be restored using an iron, steam and a clean white cotton cloth.
1. Place your hat on an ironing board.
2. Heat the iron to its highest temperature and activate the steam function.
3. Once the iron is ready, test the steam before using it on the hat.
4. Place a clean white cotton fabric, such as a white pillowcase, over the brim. Gently iron the brim through the cotton fabric using a little steam. Work gradually all the way around the brim until it is perfectly flat.
5. Once the brim is flat, you may leave it flat or give it some shape by gently pushing the front of the brim down and lifting the rear of the brim upwards.
How to attach the chin strap
The removable chin strap is secured directly to the internal sweatband using the two brass clips. The clips gently pinch the edge of the sweatband and do not require any permanent fittings or holes.
1. Hold the chin strap and identify the two brass clips and adjustable brass toggle.
2. Position one clip on the left side of the internal sweatband and the other on the right side.
Gently pinch each clip onto the edge of the internal sweatband until it is securely attached.
3. Once both clips are attached, use the brass toggle to adjust the chin strap to the required position.
How to place the pin on your Panama hat
The Marchesi di Montecristi pin is positioned on the bow on the left side of the hat band.
1. Hold the pin and locate the bow on the left side of the hat.
2. Hold the decorative logo between your fingers and insert the needle horizontally through the bow.
Slide the needle through the bow until the pin is securely positioned.
3. In its final position, the needle should be completely hidden behind the bow and only the small decorative logo should remain visible at the centre of the bow.
