What Makes a Genuine Women's Panama Hat

Despite the name, authentic Panama hats are not made in Panama. They are handwoven in Ecuador, primarily in the regions of Montecristi and Cuenca, from the fibres of the Toquilla palm. The craft was recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012.

A genuine Panama hat is naturally breathable, lightweight, and rated UPF 50+. It rolls and packs without damage, returns to shape without steaming, and improves in character with wear. Machine-woven imitations, made from paper pulp, synthetic straw, or coarser plant fibres, offer none of these qualities, and the difference becomes immediately apparent when you hold one.

If you want to understand how to tell the difference, our guide to spotting a fake Panama hat covers the key tests in detail.

Choosing the Right Brim Width

Brim width is the most important styling decision when choosing a women's Panama hat. It determines the silhouette, the level of sun protection, and the occasions the hat suits best.

Classic Fedora (5 to 6cm brim)

The classic fedora is the most versatile women's Panama hat shape. It works as well with a sundress at the races as it does with tailored separates in the city. The pinched crown and medium brim give it a structured elegance that never goes out of style.

Medium Brim (7 to 8cm)

A medium brim adds presence without going into full statement territory. It is the ideal choice for races, garden parties, and occasions where you want a hat that photographs beautifully without overwhelming a refined outfit.

Wide Brim (10 to 12cm)

The wide brim is where Panama hats become truly glamorous. Excellent UPF 50+ sun protection, dramatic silhouette, and unmistakable presence at any outdoor event. This is the dominant shape across our Regency Collection and many of our colour-dyed pieces.

Couture and Oversized Brim (15 to 16cm)

For maximum impact. The 'First Lady' and 'Corsica' sit at this end of the range, designed for women who want a hat that defines the outfit rather than complements it. Statement pieces for those who know exactly what they want.

Understanding Women's Panama Hat Grades

The grade of a Panama hat refers to the fineness of the weave, measured in weaves per inch (WPI). The higher the grade, the longer the weaver spends on each hat, and the more refined the result.

Fine and Cuenca Fine grades (WPI 8 to 10) are entirely handwoven in Ecuador and represent excellent everyday Panama hats. Most of our ladies' collection sits in this tier. Breathable, lightweight, and a genuine Panama hat at an accessible price point.

Superfino and Cuenca Fine grades (WPI 14 to 16) are tightly woven in a Llano herringbone. They have a smoother, more refined surface and hold their shape with exceptional precision.

Precious Montecristi grades (WPI 14 to 42) are woven exclusively in the town of Montecristi, one hat per artisan, over weeks or months. These are the rarest Panama hats in the world.

Sizing a Women's Panama Hat

Most women's heads measure between 52cm and 57cm in circumference. To find your size, measure around your head approximately 1cm above your ears using a soft tape measure. If you fall between sizes, size up. Panama hats can be adjusted slightly with the internal band, and many of our styles are available in adjustable fits.

Our Sizing & Fit guide covers this in detail, including how to measure and what to do if your head falls between standard sizes.

Caring for Your Hat

A genuine Montecristi Panama hat will last decades with proper care and improve with age. Store in a hat box or dust bag to protect the shape and weave. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, as the straw can dry and become brittle over time. A light steam can help reshape a brim that has lost its line.

Panama hats are delicate handwoven pieces and should be treated accordingly. Please refer to the care instructions included with your hat.

Hand-Finished in Britain

Every hat in our women's collection is hand-finished at our UK atelier. Shaping, blocking, trimming, sweatband fitting, and final quality inspection are all carried out by our artisans before any hat is approved for sale. Each piece carries a discreet silk-branded interior patch as a mark of provenance.
